Somerset Fruit Machinery (SFM Technology Ltd) has been rescued from administration, following the purchase of assets, goodwill and intellectual property by Bramley Precision Aerospace Ltd.
The purchase will also secure more than 15 local jobs.
SFM Technology Ltd initially started in 1985 as Somerset Fruit Machinery, designing and manufacturing bespoke fruit harvesting equipment for apples and blackcurrants. In 2012, the company received a Royal Warrant for the supply of harvesting equipment to the royal household.
By this point, the company had already diversified, using its precision engineering capabilities to offer its services to the aerospace and advanced manufacturing sectors. It had since supported national and international firms.
Despite its success, cash flow pressures forced the company into administration. However, the capabilities and skilled workforce made it an attractive purchase for Graham and Emma Bramley, owners of Bramley Engineering.
Graham Bramley, managing director of Bramley Aerospace, said: “Businesses like SFM are built on people, skill and years of experience. When we looked at SFM, we saw a proud Somerset engineering business with a remarkable history, a talented team and real potential for the future.
“Our priority is to keep work moving for customers and give the team in Martock the confidence to look forward again.”
The company is now looking to stabilise the business, support existing customers and rebuild relationships with suppliers. As part of this, the company is recruiting for an office manager, CNC operative, design manufacturing manager and other skilled individuals to secure and expand the Martock site.
