Meetings to discuss benefits of dairy herd monitoring

A series of farmer-focused meetings are being held in Devon and Cornwall to discuss the merits of using the latest technology to monitor dairy cows.

The events are been held by Allflex Livestock Intelligence and will feature presentations from Dr Alan Powell from Allflex, as well as local dairy farmers and their veterinary surgeons. The meetings will discuss the merits of using the Allflex SenseHub system to monitor heat activity and rumination patterns.

It uses neck collars and ear tags to constantly monitor movement and behavioural patterns associated with rumen health, fertility and well-being. The data can be used by herd managers to proactively improve their herd’s performance, productivity and profitability.

The meetings will be held on:

    • Thursday 20th October, 12 – 2 pm at The Sidmouth Arms, Upottery, Devon EX14 9PN
    • Thursday 3rd November, 12 – 2 pm at the Best Western Tiverton Hotel, Blundells Road, Tiverton, Devon EX16 4DB
    • Wednesday 9th November, 7 – 9 pm at the Victoria Inn, Roche, Cornwall PL26 8LQ

Speakers at the first two meetings will include Dr Powell, Sam Bowker MRCVS of Blackdown Farm Vets, Axminster, and Devon dairy farmer Phil Bird from Shute in the Axe Valley.

Dr Powell will be joined at the Roche meeting by St Columb-based dairy farmer, Andrew Brewer, along with George Giles MRCVS of Giles and Parsons Farm Vets, West Roose, Camelford.

Food will be available at each of the meetings, along with an opportunity to discuss herd monitoring after the presentations.
