Tractor of the Year 2024 – Open Field: Valtra S416

Bringing production of the S Series back to Valtra’s Suolahti factory in Finland, the sixth generation of the range is topped out by the S416. It’s powered by an AGCO Power engine offering a rated power of 404hp and maxing out at 425hp, available at 1,950rpm. Torque levels top out 1,750Nm, available at 1,500rpm. The engine features single-stage turbocharging, said to add robustness while reducing complexity and it meets Stage V regulations without an EGR, reducing the cooling requirements and therefore the fuel consumption.

Power is put to the ground via the AGCO-built ML 260 two-range, stepless transmission, with an independent oil supply and a top speed of 53kph. The closed centre, load sensing hydraulic system offers 200 litres per minute as standard but can be uprated to a 200+200 litre twin pump feeding a maximum of six rear and three front spools, one of which is a high output valve with a dedicated 170 litres per minute. All the hydraulic valves can be configured through the SmartTouch display.

The rear linkage has a maximum capacity of 12,000kg, with the option of a 5,800kg front lift.

As with the rest of the Valtra range built in the Suolahti factory, the new S Series can be put through the Unlimited Studio, providing a range of bespoke options for different operations. This includes the TwinTrac reverse steering system, various cab trims and a central tyre inflation system. Other options for municipality and forestry work are also available.

As would be expected for a tractor of this size, various precision farming systems are available, including ISOBUS Stage III for tractor implement management (TIM), as well as variable rate and section control. As standard, all Valtra tractors built in the Suolahti are also shipped with a full tank of HVO renewable diesel.

The Valtra S416 is also a finalist in the Sustainable ToTY category.
