Development opportunities for beef industry advisers

Advisers to the beef industry are being encouraged to hone their skills by taking part in the Developing Beef Expertise Programme.

AHDB Beef & Lamb is running the programme for a second time following successful uptake in 2015/2016. The scheme is open to consultants and advisers to the beef industry who want to expand their knowledge through continuous professional development (CPD).

The 2018/2019 programme will start in June 2018 and will include five two-day meetings over a 12-month period, covering various topics affecting beef enterprises.

Sarah Pick, AHDB Beef & Lamb Knowledge Exchange Manager, said: “One of the priorities in AHDB Beef & Lamb’s ‘Inspiring success’ 2017-2020 strategy is to increase the profitability per hectare of producers who benchmark with AHDB. One of the key ways to deliver this is to ensure well-trained and experienced consultants and advisers continue to be available to the beef and sheep industry.

“The 2015-16 Developing Beef Expertise Programme produced a group of 14 trained consultants and advisers who have helped deliver AHDB Beef & Lamb events, knowledge exchange resources and, most recently, the Strategic Farm and Challenge Sheep initiatives. Therefore, it is important those who apply are available to deliver independent consultancy once the programme is completed.”

The five meetings will be held in different regions across England and will cover topics such as:

    • Current beef market landscape (markets, consumer trends, Brexit)
    • Meeting market specification
    • Business tools
    • Health and antimicrobial resistance
    • Nutrition and grassland management
    • Breeding and genetics
    • Professional skills eg communication, facilitation, presentation

Consultants, advisers, vets and industry representatives from across the industry are encouraged to apply to join the group. For further information and an application form visit beefandlamb.ahdb.org.uk/returns/developing-beef-expertise. Alternatively, email Yanna.Hall@ahdb.org.uk. The closing date for applications is 30 March 2018. Applicants will be informed of their success by 16 April 2018.
