Tractor registrations down nearly a quarter in first three months

The downturn in agricultural tractor registrations has continued in the first three months of 2025, with the March figure being the lowest recorded since 2016.

Now the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) has released a breakdown of registrations by power and region.

Every power bracket saw a decline of at least 10%, with the most pronounced being the 241-320hp sector. This sector was the best performing in 2024 but dropped from 319 machines in the first three months of that year to just 163 in the same period in 2025 – a drop of 48.9%.

The 101-120hp segment saw a similar decline, dropping from 299 machines to 171 (-42.8%), while the +320hp bracket dropped 33.8% from 133 machines to just 88. The other notable decline was in the 161-200hp bracket – making up just over a quarter of all registrations – which dropped from 763 to 596 registrations (-21.9%).

    Registrations by region

The picture by county is similarly bleak. The only area to see a decline of less than 10% was the Home Counties & London, which dropped 2% from 100 machines to 98. However, its small impact on the overall market actually increased from 3.5% of the total registrations to 4.4%.

The biggest drops were seen in the North East, with Yorkshire & Humberside declining year-on-year by 53.7% to just 94 machines and the North East dropping 45.7% to 50 registrations.

Every other region saw a decrease of at least 10%, with areas such as Wales seeing declines as pronounced as 32%.
