UK Agri-Tech Centre helps to prevent drug-resistant infections

Last week was World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week, and as part of it, the UK Agri-Tech Centre was showcasing its role in helping prevent the spread of drug-resistant infections in agriculture.

It is keen to work with partners which think about the health and safety of livestock and has recently partnered with Oxi-Tech Solutions for a project to clean milking systems without chemicals.

In addition to this, the company is working hard to help reduce the use of antibiotics.

Paul Morris, chief executive at Oxi-Tech Solutions, said: “We are working to reduce dependency on chemicals like chlorine and increase sanitation levels of water in the parlours.

“Hopefully this will reduce the spread of mastitis causing bacteria and water borne pathogens, but without increasing drug dependency or harm to the environment.

“We work towards prevention rather than cure but in a sustainable manner.”

Due to drug resistance, antibiotics and antimicrobial agents can become ineffective, making infection difficult or impossible to treat. This can lead to increased spread, severe illness and mortality.
