James Stewart of Stewart Trailers purchased the 2.8m Major Cyclone to control bracken and willow for his sheep farm on the rolling hills of Aberdeenshire in north-east Scotland.
The farm faces a significant challenge with bracken and willow, which reduce grazing potential and make the land unproductive. Initially, James used a simple topper to control the vegetation, but it was ineffective, as the plants quickly regenerated.
His local dealer, Sellars Agriculture, recommended the Major Cyclone rotary mulcher, which was already successfully tackling bracken for other farmers in the area.
Impressed with its performance while on demo, James purchased a 2.8m Major Cyclone. The mulcher requires just 80-120hp and is equipped with four rotors and 16 knives. This allows it to cut and mulch vegetation, evenly dispersing it over full-length rollers. The cutting height can be adjusted between 40mm and 200mm.
Built from Strenx 700MC structural steel, the Major Cyclone is stronger and lighter than traditional toppers and its hot-dip galvanisation protects it from rust and damage. James noted the machine’s robust frame, heavy-duty gearbox and long-term durability “There’s no substitute for quality engineering,” explained James. “I have to say that the Major Cyclone is truly a fine piece of quality engineering.”
The Major Cyclone effectively processes bracken and willow, even with heavy clumps or 3-inch willow stems, in just one pass. Unlike standard toppers, it doesn’t leave clumps behind but finely shreds and spreads the material, leaving a clean finish.
“The way the Cyclone chops everything completely, shreds it and spreads it around is unbelievable,” said James. “I was a bit concerned about its ability to chop one-inch willow stems, but I didn’t need to have worried because it takes it on without flinching.” James is now considering using it for heather control instead of burning.
James lauds the Cyclone’s performance in difficult conditions. “I would recommend the Major Cyclone to anyone who needs to control heavy vegetation on pastureland,” he continued.
“For hill farms especially where the bracken invasion is having a detrimental effect on the grazing performance of the land. Also, land with heavy excess vegetation and infestation which makes it almost impossible to round-up the sheep safely.
“For me, the Cyclone, has changed everything and made hill management much simpler. The Cyclone is without doubt ‘the’ solution to bracken and willow control and for me it has performed way beyond my expectations!”
