More than £2m grossed as Cheffins vintage auctions get underway

The first Cheffins vintage auction of 2026 has grossed £2.4m with global bidding reportedly pushing up prices.

3,500 lots went under the hammer, including vintage tractors, cars, motorbikes and collectors’ items on 24th and 25th April. Of the 400 classic and vintage tractors, a 1962 Matbro Mastiff achieved the highest price, selling to a buyer in Cheshire for £68,608.

It was one of only six remaining models and was previously purchased in a Cheffins sale in the early 1980s for £325.

Other highlights included a 1987 Ford TW-35, which achieved £61,004, and a 1996 Massey Ferguson 399, with only 2,800 hours, which sold for £48,240.

Tom Godsmark, director at Cheffins, said: “It was fantastic to launch the vintage season with such a strong sale. We welcomed thousands of buyers over the two days and saw exceptional results across every category, with standout prices achieved for the very best examples.

“The remarkable growth in values for classic and vintage tractors was clearly demonstrated by the Matbro Mastiff, which sold well above expectations. The sector remains highly competitive, with collectors from around the world seeking the finest machines. The increase in value from £325 forty years ago to more than £68,000 today highlights the long-term investment potential of this niche market.”
