Copa and Cogeca welcomed a decision by the Canadian authorities to re-open Canada’s markets to imports of European beef, saying it will help to alleviate pressure on the market.

Copa-Cogeca Secretary-General Pekka Pesonen stressed “Its good news that European beef exports from 19 Member States will be able to resume and that Canada recognizes that the EU will be able to operate as a Single entity with uniform and harmonized rules .It shows Canadas commitment to the recent free trade deal between the EU and Canada”.

“Farmers and agri-cooperatives are facing a very difficult time at the moment and its important to find new market outlets. We are very proud of our quality beef which respects some of the highest standards in the world and offers consumers a good source of protein for a balanced, nutritious diet. I hope that trade can also start with 9 other member states that are making applications and I believe that the Commission is working on this”, he added.
