Eminox joins project for first liquid methane tractor

Reported to be the world’s first ‘fugitive liquid methane-powered tractor, a new £15.6 million project is been spearheaded by CNH Industrial alongside Bennamann Ltd and European Thermodynamics Ltd, with support from an Eminox emissions reduction solution.

“This is a truly innovative project, and we are delighted to be part of the team that will develop a pioneering and game-changing, net-zero alternative for the agricultural sector,” said Stefano Tumolo, sales and marketing director, Eminox. “The heavy-duty agricultural vehicle will harness the potential of methane, produced by livestock, and utilise it as a renewable fuel solution.”

It is one of five projects supported by the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) which has put forward £73 million. The projects are expected to save the CO2 equivalent emissions of around one million cars over their lifetime.

The methane-powered tractor is expected to support around 700 UK jobs. As part of the development, Eminox will produce a bespoke emissions reduction system, recognising that alternative fuel solutions will still require emissions control.

Mr Tumolo added; “To achieve net zero it is important that innovative projects such as this in the automotive sector are funded, and that collaborative working is established to draw on the expertise of each partner. This vital research and development will be a significant step towards transport decarbonisation and will draw on some of the world’s best businesses to find new ways of doing things to achieve global goals.”
