AHDB Beef and Lamb highlights Halal sector market opportunities

The importance of the Halal sector and the value it adds to the UK sheep meat sector is highlighted in a new publication.

AHDB Beef and Lamb has published a Halal Meat Facts booklet, outlining key statistics and the opportunities presented by the sector in the UK and in export markets, on its website beefandlamb.ahdb.org.uk.

It includes information on the size of the market in the UK and overseas, and what products the Muslim community looks for. It also highlights support materials it has developed for the industry to maximise carcase utilisation, such as the Lamb Cutting Guide for the Halal market.

Produced with input from industry stakeholders, it is part of AHDB Beef and Lamb’s wider activity to highlight the role the Halal sector has to play in supporting the sheep meat and beef industry. Hard copies of the booklet will be made available at the Birmingham Eid Mela festival on August 16.

Dr Phil Hadley, head of supply chain business development at AHDB Beef and Lamb, said: “Halal adds value to the sheep sector, in particular, and increasingly presents opportunities for the cattle sector.

“We were keen to take a proactive approach in highlighting the role it has to play. Our Halal Meat Facts booklet provides a quick and easy reference guide to the size of the market and what products it demands, as well as signposting some of AHDB’s support materials for industry professionals.

“Ultimately, the Halal sector presents a valuable and growing market opportunity which UK producers and processors can benefit from. We continue to support the industry to help maximise the potential that the Halal market offers.”
