Firestone making tracks at World Ploughing Contest

Firestone has ploughed an impressive furrow to a world-famous event in Yorkshire, where its Maxi Traction 65 product was showcased to an audience of millions.

The World Ploughing Contest, which has attracted television crews and interest from all across the globe, gave the brand the perfect platform to show off its acclaimed new tyre at Crockley Hill, following its launch in Spring 2016.

The Maxi Traction 65 boasts wider, deeper and longer lugs provide a larger rubber-to-earth contact area, increasing tyre life and returning savings to land-owners.

Firestone were appearing at the World Ploughing Contest as headline sponsors, displaying their name on all display boards and field dividers across the Hobson Farming Ltd site, who are renowned for growing potatoes.

The World Ploughing Contest only comes to the United Kingdom every sixteen years and winners in the British National Ploughing Championships, qualify for the worldwide competition for the following year, hosted in Kenya for 2017.

Across the four-day event, Firestone’s exhibition stand was awash with visiting farmers, as the brand was able to communicate the benefits of the tyre – not to mention its portfolio of other products.

The World Ploughing Contest boasts a plethora of exciting, historical and competitive events across four major categories, ending in grand finale World Ploughing Contest itself, where Englishman Davie Chappell was hotly tipped to retain his title.

Entering its 63rd year, the competition represents the crescendo in a year-long selection process both nationally and worldwide, including over-100 UK associations and societies.

Firestone has been associated with the World and British National Ploughing Championships for 50 years, following Ken Chappell MBE’s 1967 British National Ploughing Championship title.

Ken’s son Mick, 54, is sponsored by Firestone and his Kubota M8560 was kitted out in Firestone tyres as he aimed to follow in his father’s footsteps by winning the British title.

Ken is now an MBE and an executive director for the Society of Ploughmen, began his association with Firestone in 1966, winning the headline prize the following year before collecting a trio of Vintage trophies in the late nineties.

Michael will be representing England in the 33rd European Reversible Ploughing Championships which takes place in Scotland during October.

As the name suggests, the Maxi Traction 65 boasts 4% greater tractions against its predecessors, increasing crop yields whilst cutting working timed due to its sufficient self-cleaning action.
Although tractor tyres spend most of their time on arable land, the Maxi Traction 65 boasts increased traction and lug overlap minimalising rubber-wear and improved driver comfort, both on the turf and the tarmac.

Steve Hewitt, North Region Agricultural Product Manager, said: “This is a superb event. With all the pressures of farming, this was a real weekend of fun displaying the mechanical brilliance of farming, plus the artistic nature of the ploughing industry.

“We were able to showcase our products to the perfect audience and we were delighted with the impression that we made.”
