Mark Popplewell has won gold in the 2025 Yield Enhancement Network (YEN) awards for an 11.46t/ha crop of Merlin Oats, more than double the national average.
“The numbers were so high we thought the equipment was faulty,” said Mark. “The grain tank was filling faster than even a strong wheat crop.”
It was the first oat crop for Happy Days Farming, with 300ha established in late March. Seeds were treated, and the crop received growth regulators and optimised fertiliser applications for a yield that reached 14t/ha in some areas.
Mark plans to grow more of the crop in 2025, noting that it fits well into the rotation.
Gemma Clarke, managing director of seed and grain specialist Cope, which launched Merlin to the market in 2021, highlighted the importance of investing in new varieties. “Resilient seed varieties are critical as farmers face increasing challenges from climate change and unpredictable weather.
