EAMU registration for Flax Flea Beetle control

Winter and spring linseed growers will now be able to use Lambdastar, which contains 100g per litre of lambda-cyhalothrin, after it received an Extension of Authorisation for Minor Use (EAMU).

“This EAMU approval comes as welcome news as an additional option for linseed growers looking to protect their crops from flax flea beetle,” said Ruth Stanley, Life Scientific’s UK & Ireland country manager.

While linseed has proven to be an attractive break crop for those who cannot grow oilseed rape due to cabbage stem flea beetle, the crop is at risk from flax flea beetle. Linseed is generally most at risk once cotyledons appear when the crop is around 5cm tall. Symptoms include holes or notches in the cotyledons or in the first true leaves.

Premium Crops agronomist, Hannah Foxall, has found that Lambdastar can be an effective insecticide against the beetle. “This EAMU approval increases the range of products containing the active lambda-cyhalothrin available to growers and helps broaden the spectrum of insecticides to reduce resistance risk.”

The product is reverse-engineered from Hallmark Zeon and is a contact and ingested pyrethroid insecticide for control in cereals, oilseed rape, peas, beans, potatoes, sugar beet, carrots, parsnips, brassicas and pear crops.

Mrs Stanley noted that the best results have been from 75ml of Lambdastar in 200 litres of water. “If using Lambdastar with no other products in the tank, a non-ionic wetter can improve the application.”
