Biggest soya bean meal vessel lands in the UK

Glencore has brought in what is believed to be the biggest shipment of soya feed products to land in the UK. The mv Adriana Rose docked at the company’s new feed store and distribution centre on Teesside, carrying 54,000 tonnes direct from the Glencore crushing facility in Argentina.

Glencore UK Managing Director, James Maw, highlighted that with the direct supply import of soya, the company’s new feed business can offer unrivalled assurance for customers. “Glencore has managed every step of the supply chain, across more the 6500 miles of the Atlantic through to the end-consumer in the UK,” he said.

“It gives quality assurance and traceability from buying the soya beans direct from farms in Argentina, through the Glencore crush facility at Timbúes, to arranging shipment by our freight division in Rotterdam and into our store in Teesport.

“With our well-proven transport network, we can now arrange cost-effective distribution to mills and compound feed producer across all the main livestock areas of the UK.”

The Timbúes facility in Argentina is currently crushing more than 21,000 tonnes of soya beans per day. For the UK, the mv Adriana Rose carried a segregated cargo of high-protein soya bean meal and high-fibre soya bean hulls.

Mr Maw added that Glencore had worked closely with PD Ports to develop the warehousing facility at Teesport to full TASAC and UFAS standards accreditation, alongside the deep-water berths and high-capacity handling facilities to enable such significant imports.

He reported the distribution store at Teesport would be open from 6.00am to 10.00pm five days a week, and on Saturdays by arrangement, in a move requested by customers to facilitate more efficient transport and mill operation.

“The new Glencore feed business, working with Mercury Commodities, is focussed on supplying high quality feed ingredients and providing the highest levels of customer service,” he said. “With the new facility at Teesport, plus Portland in Dorset on the south coast and the nationwide Glencore Grain operation, we are in an excellent position to supply the industry with feed ingredients and grow the business in the future.”
