New global sustainable agriculture standards announced by LEAF

LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) has launched the latest version of its Marque Standard, said to be a significant evolution of its assurance work around sustainable farming.

The review was undertaken with stakeholders, as well as a public consultation, and was overseen by the LEAF Marque Technical Advisory Committee.

Key updates include an enhanced environmental focus, with new requirements to address sustainability challenges such as habitat areas, soil health, regenerative farming, water management, emissions, peat, livestock and food waste. It also broadens the scope to support diverse farming systems and geographies, as well as greater flexibility, enabling application through the supply chain. Finally, it integrates more closely with the LEAF Sustainable Farming Review.

David Webster, CEO of LEAF, said: “Given the ongoing pressures on farming to adapt to rapidly changing environmental conditions and new legislation, it is imperative that we provide assurance frameworks that are practical and serve to align with the interests of both the natural environment and the market. Version 17.0 of LEAF Marque marks a significant step forward for LEAF as we continue to invest in our systems and processes to support the interests of LEAF members globally.”

The new standards come into effect on the 5th of May 2026.
