New Holland celebrates 50 years of skid steers

The New Holland L35, first launched in 1971

Making up a key part of the New Holland portfolio, the skid steer has become a necessary investment for many farm, amenity and construction operations. This year, the company is celebrating 50 years of development in skid steer loaders.

The birth of the New Holland skid steer took place when an engineer discovered that his mower design could be turned on its side to achieve an upward and forward reaching motion. This would later become the Super Boom vertical lift loader design.

New Holland introduced its first commercial skid steer, the L35, in 1971, featuring the vertical lift design and a longer wheelbase for a smooth steady ride. The company was also the first to introduce roll-over and falling object protection.

Continued development has led to the latest 300 Series, with nine models ranging from 60hp to 90hp and operating capacities from 815kg up to 2,045kg. It’s said to offer greater visibility, reach and height, as well as enhanced operator comfort.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary, customers who purchase a skid steer from mid-June until the end of the celebrations will receive a 50 Years Edition decal on the rear left-hand side of the machine.

Designed with operators in mind, new features include maintenance tracking, engine protection and ignition time out for maximum uptime and productivity. An 8-inch LCD display shows machine performance and engine data, as well as the reversing camera, and allows the operator to adjust the electro-hydraulic controls.
