Survey into farmers’ approach to livestock pain management

Norbrook, one of the leading global pharmaceutical companies in farm animal healthcare, is conducting a survey to understand how pain management can improve productivity and welfare.

The aim of the survey, which is open to livestock farmers across the UK, is to learn how farmers are successfully implementing pain management initiatives.

“We are interested in gaining the insights and experiences of farmers so that we can understand best practice approaches to pain management,” said Rebecca Laborne, Large Animal Product Manager for Norbrook. “Since the Animal Welfare Act was introduced in 2006, the effective use of analgesics and anti-inflammatory treatments on farm has become more established as an important tool in good livestock husbandry, not only to achieve higher welfare standards but also to enhance productivity.

“With farmers advocating improved welfare and desiring increased productivity, we are eager to understand how pain management tools and processes are being used to achieve those objectives,” Ms Laborne added.”We want farmers to suggest where they see the most success in pain management – both for ad hoc problems, such as lameness, and for routine procedures like disbudding and castration.

“Once we have the data, the aim is to share the results of the survey with the wider veterinary and farming community, and to develop support materials and activities in any areas where a need is identified,” added Ms Laborne.

The survey consists of 13 key questions and should only take a few minutes to complete. Farmers who complete it will be entered into a prize draw to win a £250 retail voucher, courtesy of Norbrook.
