World class genetics from across the UK featuring in Harrison & Hetherington’s annual Black and White Sale

The Borderway Black and White Sale at Carlisle which this year will be held on Saturday 7th December, is a globally recognised and highly successful event within the dairy industry. In a year that has been headlined internationally as the best yet for UK genetics, the incredible line up for 2019 features consignments from all over the UK and Ireland, with bloodlines that cover continents.

Hosted by Harrison & Hetherington, this prestigious event, now in its 33rd year, is firmly established as a global opportunity to invest in the world’s leading genetics and this year has 115 animals being presented for sale.  The sale, sponsored by Genus ABS and Holstein UK, will commence at 11am at Borderway, Carlisle with the sale preview and International Reception being held on the 6th December at 7pm.

A focal point for international pedigree breeders, the sale, also includes highly sought-after genetics from all the major dairy breeds, and provides an exclusive opportunity to buy embryos, not offered to market anywhere in the world.

Commenting on the upcoming sale H&H dairy auctioneer, Glyn Lucas, said: “The standard of animals selling at this year’s Black and White Sale truly reflects the status of this event in the pedigree calendar, and matches the status of UK Genetics, which have been hitting the headlines in 2019 reinforcing what we already know: that the very best dairy genetics in the world are in the UK!

“We have had amazing catalogues in the past but never before in one sale in the UK have so many big-time heifers featured in one catalogue. This sale has heifers that will make history, will win at the biggest shows in Europe, and will make prolific brood cows.”

The Borderway Black and White sale, highlights  in the Holsteins include, AUCHENSALA UNSTOPABULL SUMPTUOUS RED, the 1st daughter of Blondin Destry Sally EX93 to sell outside North America – Sally was Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto; HOLBEN KINGPIN BRAE, a grand daughter of the current World Dairy Expo Grand Champion, Butz-Butler Gold Barbara EX95 – this beautiful calf was the winning January Calf at the South East Calf Show in 2019; and NETHERVALLEY KINGPIN SARA, probably one of the best heifers to ever sell in the Black & White Sale series, which was Reserve Champion at the National Calf Show in 2019, and is due to Sexed Mogul in April!!

The Ayrshire highlights includes SANDYFORD FAMED CLOVER, thought to be the best Ayrshire to ever sell at public auction. She won the September class at the National Calf Show in 2019, and her dam, Sandyford Primed Clover now VG86 2yr, won the World Photographic Competition in 2017, after winning Junior Champion at UK Dairy Expo in 2016.  Her next dam is the greatest Ayrshire cow in the history of the breed – Sandyford Clover 10 EX97 – which has won more titles than any other cow in history and is now a proven bull dam through her heavily-used sons Supreme & Tricolo.

Among Brown Swiss winners on sale is KEDAR WONDERMENT RHAPPUCCINO, the first daughter of the three times UK Dairy Expo Grand Champion, Kedar Rhapsody EX95.  This close-to-perfect calf is sired by Wonderment and already has overseas interest.

In the Jersey section the, standouts are:  OLYMPIC GORGEOUS TEQUILA, bred from one of the all time great Jersey cows of the breed – Vandenberg Amedeo Gorgeous EX97-3E 15*,  who was a four time Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, Canada; and LEMRAC KENDRA, a Valentino daughter who’s grand dam is probably the best Jersey cow in Europe, Avonlea Signature Kendra EX95, which won Swiss Expo in 2014.

Glyn added: “More and more people attending the event also value a chance to meet with like-minded, progressive and ambitious farmers, who look to improve the genetic index of their herds through investing in the world’s best.”

For those breeders who unfortunately cannot attend this year there is the option to watch the sale live. If you want to use the online bidding service, please register at least 48 hours prior to the event.  Full details are on the website www.harrisonandhetherington.co.uk
