Advice to recognise high quality filters to protect farm workers

Effective filtration systems are essential to keep operators safe from harmful substances in the air. According to Freudenberg Filtration Technologies, a few simple checks can ensure that vehicles are equipped with high-quality products.

The European Union established the EN 15695 standard to protect workers’ health, which defines four cabin categories, each with a different safety requirement. These range from almost no protection in category 1, up to comprehensive systems that are as effective as personal protection equipment in category 4.

“The first and easiest step in ensuring that a high-quality product is installed is doing a quick check of the label, seal and housing of the filter,” explained Giacomo Menzio, who is responsible for the agricultural filter and product service portfolio at Freudenberg Filtration Technologies.

During an inspection, the label on the filter should clearly state the scope of use and the filter category in accordance with EN 15695. The seal also needs to be intact without any apparent impairment or porous spots and the filter housing must not show any signs of damage.

Even if these show no signs of vulnerability, inside the filter housing the nonwoven pleats should be evenly spaced and appear uniform and stable.

“In multi-stage filters constructed for category 3 or 4 cabins, the aerosol and ultra-fine particle filter stage as well as the vapour filter stage is normally not visible from the outside and cannot be examined,” Mr Menzio said. “It is absolutely essential to only use genuine parts and exactly follow the handling instructions provided by the manufacturer. Do not compromise your health!”

Another point of reference for product quality is the way in which the system sits in the vehicle roof frame. There should be no gaps around the filter and it should not move, even when driving over rough terrain.

After installing a new filter, a second test should be performed after a few hours of use.

“Operators should check again whether anything has come loose, or if any parts are missing. If this is the case, the filtration system is substandard and should be examined immediately,” he added.

“If operators have concerns about the quality of the filter installed in their vehicles or would like to know more about the various quality aspects, we are happy to assist and answer their questions.”
