Virtual fencing success at Northern Ireland open day

Northern Ireland farmer, Jack Dobson, from Dunbia recently hosted an event to demonstrate the virtual fencing system from Monil.

Jack has been using the system since the spring, with 20 cows taken from the +100 head herd, and was keen to show fellow farmers about the experience.

The event also included presentations from Foyle Farms and AFBI discussing how the technology can benefit farm management.

Talking about the product, Jack said: “I’ve been really impressed with the collars since I started using them in spring 2024. The ability to save different pastures in the app and herd the animals to the desired location is a godsend – fencing costs are expensive, but using the app, moving the cows couldn’t be simpler and we can save pastures to return to once the grass has grown without the need to move or install new fences.”

Monil is reportedly impressed with UK grazing practices and sees potential for larger hill grazing, which is common in Norway where the product is made. Visitors also noted that the product could be beneficial for those using mob grazing.

Oliver Halvorsrød, head of sales, said: “We’re really keen to talk to rotational or strip grazing farmers who can help us quantify the gains in terms of feed efficiency, time spent, soil health and animal welfare.

“Theoretically, we know that with the right management, we can improve the statistics across the board but we need use cases. We’d be interested in discussing favourable terms with the right farmers who get in touch so we could create a win-win situation for all concerned.”
