On-farm productivity in spotlight for Research Review

Combined breed analysis for terminal sire sheep breeds and improving youngstock health are just some of the projects highlighted in the AHDB Beef & Lamb 2017 R&D review.

The third edition of the review provides a useful summary of some of the research AHDB Beef & Lamb is carrying out on behalf of the industry, including key findings from completed projects and updates on current research.

The organisation funds more than 30 research projects every year, with the aim of generating practical outcomes that the industry can adopt. A number of PhD projects are also funded, which produce high-quality research while providing training for people keen to enter the industry.

AHDB’s Inspiring Success Strategy, launched earlier in the year, seeks to achieve the vision of a world-class food and farming industry that is inspired by and competing with the best. Accelerating innovation and productivity growth through coordinated R&D and knowledge exchange (KE) is a key priority within the strategy.

Adam Quinney, AHDB Beef & Lamb Sector chair, said: “Our current strategy focuses our research activity in areas that will really drive productivity and profitability on farm, including increasing on-farm uptake of genetic potential, making meat production more efficient through improved nutrition and management and improving animal welfare.”

The review was launched at a workshop held by AHDB Beef & lamb last week. Copies can be downloaded from the website or they can be ordered in hard copy from comms@ahdb.org.uk
